The Renault 5 when introduced in 1972 had slopped hatchback and a dashboard in the front. It was more styled on the Renault 4 and had front wheel drive with longitude mounted engine. The engines were OHV and ranged from 850 to 1,289 cc. Later versions expanded the power to 1,397 cc. The dashboard mounted gear shift was later changed to a floor mounted lever. This was among the first car to be fitted with plastic bumpers that now you find in every vehicle. The engine was located deep in the engine bay so space was freed to accommodate passengers and luggage. A five door car was added to R5 series and a 1.4 litre engine introduced in 1981 increased the cars power significantly and contributed to fuel economy while driving at all speeds. R5’s production was conducted till 1985 and weighed about 810 kg. A Renault 5 GT Turbo was introduced in the same year and it achieved 60 mph in just 7.5 seconds.
